As seen on PBS stations comes this new “living history” series about two modern families who travel back in time to experience life as it was lived in a 1937 rural Newfoundland outport fishing community. The two families, the Wheelers and the Murrays, as well as Mary Ann and Ralph two outsiders that will be living with each of households, spend two eye-opening months fishing for cod and preparing authentic meals with only the bare necessities at their disposal. Both families must learn to conserve what little food they have for the duration of the summer. The women find out that cooking takes an entire day, and the men leave to fish at dawn and don’t arrive home until dusk. Everyone struggles with fatigue and exhaustion. Tensions rise as personalities clash among the group and as time runs out for the outport to meet its fishing quota. Experience the remarkable ups and downs of life in Hay Cove, New Foundland. During a recent trip home to St. John’s for a friend’s wedding, I was able to get a day fishing at one of my old fishing holes. This is a small cove in St. John’s about 5 minutes for my parents house. I was able to catch a couple trout and see a couple unexpected visitors.

The 16mm film looks at the relationship of two cultures in Newfoundland, one passed and one in threat of passing: the Beothuk and the Cod Fishery. Historically, fishing brought European settlers to the island and, until recently, dominated the islands economy whilst generating a folklore and distinct identity for Newfoundlanders. The right-channel of the film details the life of this changing industry. This is juxtaposed with the left-channel, which explores the extinction of the Beothuk by depicting the absence of presence at locations of importance to this culture. The piece forges a marrying and confusion between these prominent Newfoundland stories and speaks of greater issues of loss, responsibility and the legacy of culture.
