The Rowdyman – “Dere’s too goddam many Roy’s” (and final scene)

0 The Rowdyman Deres too goddam many Roys (and final scene)The classic “Too many Roy’s” scene from Gordon Pinsent’s 1972 film The Rowdyman.

The Rowdyman
(Canada, 1972; Director: Peter Carter; 95 minutes)
Written by and starring Gordon Pinsent in a larger-than-life performance, this 1972 classic gave cause for hope to an indigenous cinema based on people and landscapes recognizable to Canadians as their own. The Rowdyman was one of the most important English-Canadian films of the seventies, made when the feature film business was just getting underway in a meaningful fashion. This wonderfully energetic and appealing film reaches beyond its modesty to strike a chord that still resonates today. ”

The Return to Bishop’s Falls

2 The Return to Bishops FallsThe Anthony Martin Memorial Foundation; (www.anthonymartin.org) pays a visit to the birthplace of Tony Martin; in the little town of Bishop’s Falls Newfoundland in June of 2009.

Originally a timber and rail town, Bishop’s Falls was named after an Anglican Bishop who discovered the area’s waterfall during his trip up the Exploits River at the closing end of the 19th Century.

One of the men who came to Bishop’s Falls in the late 1910s was George Martin. Originally from Nova Scotia, of German-Dutch descent, George Martin was orphaned at a young age; both his parents had succumbed to natural causes. A family friend took him under his wing and brought him to British Columbia to work in the timber industry.

At a later age, George decided to return east and work in the forests of Newfoundland, where jobs were plentiful. Working for the Anglo-Newfoundland company, who quickly put him to work supervising lumberjacks in Bishop’s Falls, George Martin set out a new life on his own. Stopping by Norris Arm on his way to Bishop’s, he met Mary Ann Ryan who worked in the town’s hotel; a hotel owned by her family. They both decided they would marry and raise a family.

They eventually moved to Bishop’s Falls where they raised 5 children; John, Delia, Elizabeth, Caroline; and their youngest, Tony Martin.

Although Tony Martin loved the town of Bishop’s Falls and spent summers working with his father in the woods, cutting down trees, building roads, dams, and log cabins, he was not to follow in the footsteps of his father. He would seek his own adventure in a country half-way around the world; in the Philippines, where he worked as a missionary priest with the Scarboro Missions.

The AMMF is a non-registered, non-charitable, family-owned memorial foundation with contacts in both Canada and the Philippines. Our aim is to preserve and promote the legacy of Tony Martin; a native of Bishops Falls.

Although we are a small Catholic Organization, we reach out to all religious denominations, in the pursuit of carrying on Tony Martin’s lifelong mission of establishing Credit Unions in the Philippines; his quest to alleviate poverty in that country went beyond the boundaries of religion.

Tony Martin himself came from parents of both religious backgrounds; his father, a Baptist, and his mother, a Catholic; yet he idolized his father, and respected his mother.

His motto “You can`t preach the love of God when the people are starving“ established Tony Martin as a unique missionary priest; Tony Martin reached out to the poor in the Philippines; regardless of religious affiliation.

Help us preserve the memory of this remarkable Canadian.

Steady Brook Falls, Newfoundland and Labrador

2 Steady Brook Falls, Newfoundland and LabradorBy Peter Bull, Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism

Steady Brook Falls is worth the hike anytime of the year, but early spring is definitely the best. Located about six kilometres east of Corner Brook and just off the Trans Canada Highway, the falls are very accessible and a great place to stretch you legs. We took the short hike to the falls on April 17th. Warm sunny days melting high country snow followed by rain brought the falls up to an impressive level the day of our hike. The falls can be seen from the Trans Canada Highway but one should really pull off at Steady Brook (Exit 8) and experience it fully. The trailhead is behind the Tim Hortons at the base of Marble Mountain and there are two viewing platforms providing excellent photo opportunities.
