In an ironic twist, a protester from the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals was pied in Newfoundland on Friday.
The unusual scene unfolded in St. Johns as a group of people were waiting outside for the arrival of Prime Minister Stephen Harper at an event.
The protester, 21-year-old Emily Lavender, was dressed as a seal and was holding a sign that read: “Harper Stop the Seal Slaughter.”
However, a man dressed up in a dog suit arrived, knocked off the head on Lavenders seal cost costume and tossed a pie in her face.
The man in the dog suit then took off down the street.
PETA made headlines earlier in the week when one of their members pied Fisheries Minister Gail Shea in the face in protest of the seal hunt.
After Fridays sneak pie attack, Lavender told reporters that the Shea incident wasnt out of line.
“It’s not nearly as embarrassing as the blood on her hands, she said. And it’s time she stop supporting the largest massacre of marine mammals on the planet.”
The dog-costumed man wasnt the only person who took offence to Lavenders protest.
Standing nearby, local Wallace Ryan, wearing a shirt that read If seals were ugly, nobody would give a damn, told Lavender to go home.
“We’re here to point out that PETA has incited violence and hate against Newfoundland and Labrador for years,” he said.
Its not clear if any organized group was behind Fridays pie plot.
The EU imposes their ban on Canadian seal products. Nothing wrong with the way Canadians are hunting them. There are over five million of these little bastards, 300, 000 are hunted. They breed like rabbits. Meanwhile, 7000 Newfoundland and Labrador families are because of the EU. Hunting Seals is hard work, no easy task. But when the world hears Paul McCartney tuning his guitar to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Hey Jude and Helter Skelter, the earth listens. Paul McCartney eating his lettuce and rosemary roots for health. This Beatles is responsible for turning a generation into drug use, now hes telling the world what not eat or buy. Hypocrite Europeans. Canada will launch a formal protest with the World Trade Organization over a ban on the import of seal products approved by the European Union, International Trade Minister Stockwell Day announced Monday. Denmark and Romania abstained from supporting the ban during the vote, as did Austria, which wants even stronger measures against seal products. David Barry of the Fur Institute of Canada, said the ban’s approval was “not unexpected.” “We feel it’s certainly irresponsible, completely counter-productive in terms of looking at seal practice and how to do it well, and it’s simply a political move on the part of EU decision-makers,” Barry said Monday morning on CTV News Channel. In a statement, the foreign ministers said the ban was a “response to concerns about the animal welfare aspects of seal hunting practices.” Many of the EU’s 27 member countries charge that Canada’s seal hunt, the largest in the world, is inhumane. The EU objects to the large number of animals killed during the annual hunt.

@bubogloves So we …
@bubogloves So we should be promoting the use of oil based products ? That’s what fake fur is made of and it isn’t biodegradable.
Leather is made from cow, is biodegradable, and the plastic alternatives are again oil based products.

@bubogloves – There …
@bubogloves – There are animals out there being crushed and shredded alive. They are poisoned, have their spines snapped by traps to die a slow lingering death. Some are also attacked by other animals that are kept in that area explicitly to kill these smaller animals.
Welcome to the realities of the produce farm.
Farmers work their field and they need to protect their fruits, veggies and grains on the field and in storage.

That is true, the …
That is true, the point I was just trying to get across is just that at least they don’t waste anything.
I in no way condone seal hunting, I think it should be stopped but I think sometimes people just overreact about things.
Yes the way they kill them is shocking, but all death is, its no different than shooting an animal or the way any livestock is killed – the difference is we are just oblivious to those.

And, well, the way …
And, well, the way they are killed is shocking because it is cruel!
When we see videos of the seal slaughter (or of what happens in a slaughterhouse, for that matter), we are shocked, it makes us think and reconsider our decisions, because we realize that what we see is cruel and pointless.

I understand your …
I understand your point, but I see it quite differently. By the way, I like sharing opinions with open-minded people.
However, we do not need these products!
What is the point of using animal parts to clean ourselves?
Or of wearing fur?
For a long time, in the past, some people needed to do that. Here and now, in the civilized world, we don’t.
(and I’m sorry for the bad grammar! xD)

the seal hunt only …
the seal hunt only seems wrong because the way they are killed is shocking to our sensitivegeneral public.
the seals fur is used, the meat is eaten, even the seal oil is used for soap and cooking oil, there is nothing done for no reason about it

My sister was …
My sister was vegetarian for 14 years, but after spending her summers in Northern Canada doing science work and working with Ducks Unlimited, she decided to switch and now eats meat that has been hunted, or is free-range livestock, because these animals get to live a real life and die completing a cycle, rather than caged up their entire lives.

Looks like a fake.
I’m European (Italian).
I think we should do more in order to stop the barbaric, dirty, bloody Canadian seal hunt and to protect the seals.
Our ban on seal products is just a first, little step. But it isn’t enough, we need more!
We need to stop this massacre permanently, and more will be done.
Shame on Canada! We are against seal hunt.

This whole thing …
This whole thing looks totally staged to me. She seemed to laugh when she was assaulted and her head knocked off, the she looks directly at the dog picking something up , she looks directly at the pie in the dogs hand but still does nothing to stop the onslaught. Just how I perceive it is all.

Regardless of my convictions I could never stand by and watch a woman get roughed up like that. Quite frankly I’m shocked that the people of St. Johns can.
I’m afraid to ask if the police have ID the assailant.

HAHAHA!!! …
HAHAHA!!! Turnabout is fair play. Although I’m sure the PETA clones will cry about it all the way to their corporate headquarters. Who do you think is the greater villain, some poor Newfie fisherman trying to feed his family or some giant multi-national marketing corporation like PETA. Give your head a shake people. Anybody who joins, donates, or supports PETA is a corporate pawn.

You’re a fool to imply that us ‘NF crack heads’ are lacking educations and “real” jobs. Do you seriously think that 100 percent of our population dropped out of highschool to club seals for a living?
Stop embarrassing yourself.

I’m not a PETA …
I’m not a PETA supporter, however, the person in the Salty Dog costume, the mascot for Downhome Magazine should suffer the same fate as the woman who pied Gail Shea. The disguised pie thrower ran away after the incident like a punk with no balls. Stand up for your actions; at least the “crazy PETA lady showed her face. The person in the Salty Dog costume should be charged for assault just like the PETA “crazy lady”. He ran away like a little bitch, I wonder if he has balls?
Be a man, stand up
