Village of New Concord, Ohio – scenes from 1963, The John Glenn Story

Filed under: Newfoundland Scene — Tags: — admin @ 2:21 pm

0 Village of New Concord, Ohio scenes from 1963, The John Glenn StoryVery little has changed from what is seen here. It would be great to know the names of those shown — the present Mayor Greg Adams noted seeing Jim Burson http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=jim+burson+muskingum

(The narrator is Jack Webb of Dragnet fame.) This Village is 1.5 square miles (960 acres), two traffic lights, 2,651 people, 672 households, and 376 families (per 2000 Census). In 1827, the National Road (now U.S. 40) was laid through what is now New Concord, roughly following what had been the primitive roadway known as Zane’s Trace. A year later, the village of New Concord, Ohio was established by Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. The Ohio General Assembly authorized the creation of a college and on April 24, 1837, Muskingum College opened (a 240 acre campus); it became a coeducational institution in 1854.

There is a glimpse of a S-bridge, built in 1928; more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%22S%22_Bridge_II_(Muskingum_County,_Ohio)

Hennen, my maternal grandmother’s family, lived south of town — just above where I-70 passes by. Their children were Pearl, Olive, Ruth (my grandmother), Edgar, Carl, Violet and Naomi. Peal and Herbert Dengate and Olive and Bud Best lived next to each ofther on SR83, about a mile north of SR40.

I lived to the east of New Concord — 63374 Cabin Hill Rd — from 1978 to 1995 http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&t=h&msid=211820400562882939183.000467709147847ef9d16&ll=40.041021,-81.720085&spn=0.110919,0.307274&z=12&iwloc=00046770987345896ea15 with my daughters Kelly (1976) and Kasey (1978) and then wife Marsha Wagner.

Our two dogs — golden retriever and new foundland — enjoyed attending Muskingum University (was a collage until 2009) for days as students would let the dogs into their dorm rooms and feed them beer and pizza.
