The Banks of Newfoundland
From Wikipedia

“The Banks Of Newfoundland” is the earliest Newfoundland composition set down in music notation. It was composed by Chief Justice Francis Forbes in 1820 and published in a piano arrangement by Oliver Ditson of Boston. Originally composed as a dance, it was treated as a march by the soldiers of The Royal Newfoundland Regiment during World War I; it later became the Regiment’s authorized march.

It has also been associated with the Royal St. John’s Regatta since its early days. As a Regatta song it is more popularly known as “Up The Pond”, and is traditionally played as the crews pass the bandstand on their return to the stakes. It was later made the official song of the Regatta.

Heating homes these days is much easier than heating homes in the 19th century. Instead of using a woodstove, you can just set the heat to your liking with the click of a button.

Clothing these days is more expensive. In the 19th century, people would pass on clothes for many years. Now-a-days people buy new clothes for therselves whenever they need them.

Food these days can be bought at grocery stores. Food back in the 19th century was made by families on farms and fished in the summer.

Home entertainment today is much different then back in the 19th century. In the 19th century, entertainment was usually made with music or stories being told. Now-a-days, entertainment usually is on Tv’s, computer’s, music or game’s.

Climate these days is still like it was in the 19th century. In Newfoundland, during the winter, families would save up on potatoes and veggies and fish. Now-a-days, you can just go and buy food at grocery stores.

Do Canadians like North America as a continent?

Filed under: Newfoundland Culture — admin @ 6:57 pm

I am very happy that I get to share the same continent as Canadians.

I think as one landmass, the state of Canada, US, Mexico, and the Carribbean, has a lot of good in it.

The peace of this continent is in large part to the diplomatic peaceful culture of Canada, which also provides precious resources and raw materials from its land and preserves native culture very well in its North.

Alberta oil enables the population of North America to consume transportation fuel that is not as heavily dependent on Saudi Arabia, and the resources of North America from the tropics and Southeastern US enable us to enjoy great orange juice.

And Mexico is the most unique country in terms of cultural variety of groups of IndoEuropeans, local cultural groups, and thousands of regional cultures and different cuisines.

In common, this whole region is home to people who wanted some form of freedom, opportunity, open space, democracy, peaceful living…..and independence from the Dominion of European rulers…..and in slightly different ways….

We have prairies, mountains, great cities like Toronto, New York, Mexico City.

great bread basket from Manitoba/Saskatchewan down to Nebraska,

Maritimes stretching from the banks of Newfoundland to the shores of the Carolinas…..

and a beautiful Pacific coastline alllll the way down to the southern tip of Mexico 2 BC’s, British Columbia and Baja California…..

Isn’t this whole continent something fascinating on the sphere of Earth to all Canadians, Americans, and Mexicans?
I would like to see Continentalism….like all North America celebrating something for once….
After all, we agreed to this North American Free Trade Agreement….NAFTA would be with thay very intent that the Union is these 3 countries being interconnected more

Sure, I like North America but I only really pay attention to Canada to be honest.
