Hello! I am considering getting a Newfoundland puppy within probably the next year. I live in a rural area and I have a rather large yard whe he/she could roam. My only concern is that I am a school teacher and I would not be able to be with the dog during the day hours during typical school months (Aug-May). Any information someone could offer about these gentle dogs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
You are right they need rome to run but they also sleep a lot. As long as you give them toys to play with while you are away then they will be fine. They will need a lot of water and food so be ready for it.

In For A Penny, CBC, Alan Doyle, Part 1
Alan Doyle’s comments from the “In For A Penny” show on CBC-TV, a program where a group of prominent Newfoundlanders (a group that also included Mary Walsh, Andy Jones, Bernice Morgan, Christopher Pratt, Harry Steele, Robert Joy, Ed Roberts, and James Iglioliorte) were encouraged to speak their minds about matters of Newfoundland life, culture, and identity. Here, Alan gives an intriguing perspective on the importance (and lack thereof) of Confederation to those living in isolated outport communities.

Can you tall me about newfoundland dogs?
Im 13 and im getting a dog. i might get a newfoundland and am wondering about them. we have a poodle that i groom, train and exercise. would a Newfoundland be a suitable dog (even if i had to get an adult)? My mum really likes them. please tell me if they would be suitable and why. Thanks
I live in a climate that can get pretty hot in summer and pretty cold in winter.
Newfoundlands are great dogs.
they are very laid back and nice.
they do shed a lot though, and if you would let their hair grow long and not cut it regularly, you’re going to be looking at quite a bit of grooming.
they slobber a lot, but you can get newfoundlands with dry mouth, meaning they don’t slobber.
they also are very big, and prone to leg/hip problems, so keep that in mind at well.

What is the cheapest drug that kills heartworms and is safe for a Newfoundland dog.?
I have 6 Newfoundland dogs. To have all of them on name brand prevention is getting very expensive. I would like to know of something that prevents heartworms that I can buy with a reasonable price tag. Thanks for reading.
I’ve treated my dogs with Ivomec for over 10 years. It’s ivermectin, same as in Heartguard, but much more affordable. Many breeders, trainers, rescues, etc. use this very successfully and affordably.
Here’s a good link.
